This report presents selected results from the first nation- wide study to examine the incidence of reported child maltreatment and the characteristics of children & families investigated by Canadian child welfare services. The introduction provides background on the study and describes the study methodology. Chapter 2 presents estimates of incidence of reported child maltreatment by category and level of substantiation, and examines the characteristics of these categories in terms of the nature, severity, and duration of injury, and the identity of the alleged perpetrators. Chapter 3 describes child & family characteristics, including categories of maltreatment by age & sex and by child functioning, family income & housing, and selected determinants of health. The final chapter describes community responses to child maltreatment, including investigation outcomes & referrals to additional services.
