Reducing CO2 emissions from transport requires sector-wide application of low CO2 fuels. However the amount of biofuels available in the year 2050 will probably be insufficient to meet the combined energy demand for heavy duty road transport, aviation and shipping. Therefore, these long distance transport modes need to switch at least partially to other low CO2 fuels such as hydrogen. This brings about major technological challenges.
