Duplex stainless steels which give high mechanical characteristics together with high corrosion resistance are very attractive materials for structural applications. The objective of the research was to study the fracture mechanic and the fatigue behaviour of such materials. Tests have been performed on parent plates and welded joints of the three main families of duplex stainless steels. CTOD tests show that duplex materials give good toughness values at low temperature. High cycle fatigue tests show that duplex stainless steels give high fatigue strengths. The fatigue strength is only slightly affected by the presence of a corrosive environment. The fatigue behaviour of welded specimens is at least equivalent to the behaviour of the parent plate. Fatigue crack propagation rates are comparable to those obtained on other classes of steels, for the parent plates and the welded structures.
