The susceptibility of AISI 4340 steel to stress corrosion cracking in dilute NaCl solution is examined using the center-cracked and part-through-crack tension specimens and the edge-cracked cantileverbeam specimen. The data are treated in terms of linear elastic fracture mechanics. It is found that all three types of specimens can be used to determine the value of the plane-strain stress-intensity factor above which cracking will occur in the presence of this aggressive environment.
