Bedwyr Williams, who lives and works in Caernarfon, is one of Wales' most promising, if essentially surreal, young artists working today. He operates in a range of media including performance, video, photography, sound and text and his work has been previously exhibited at the National Eisteddfod and increasingly in the UK and mainland Europe. Commissioned by Ffotogallery on behalf of the Arts Council of Wales to "elicit an astute visual commentary which creatively articulates aspects of the artistic energy generated by Year of the Artist Wales", Williams has applied himself to the task by assuming the guise of a roving private detective. In this role, he has travelled the length and breadth of the country, observing, documenting and gathering evidence about some of the arts activities and individuals who benefited from the ACW Year of the Artist Wales initiative. The resulting multi-media exhibition combining sound, video excerpts, text, photographs, maps and found objects is one of intrigue, irreverence and humour. Fuelled often by only sheer determination, Bedwyr Williams has excavated some of the grittiest, extraordinary and at times, hilarious aspects of our diverse cultural workplaces. Through his inquisitive lens and sardonic texts, he weaves together a picture of the arts in Wales which is not always pretty. Yet what is manifest throughout his enquiry is the energy generated by the participants of the documented arts events, and their creative determination in sometimes adverse situations.
