"In 'Critical Mass' we have brought photography, video and text together to examine the forces of domesticity and history that led to the creation of the first atomic bomb. The catalyst for this five year collaborative work, the image/text classes we taught at San Francisco State University in 1986-7, led us to extend our collaboration into our art. As the primary artists on this project, we asked Steina and Woody Vasulka to help us expand our imagery into video. As individual artists, all of us had explored imagery and ideas about place, culture, landscape, myth and history. ... This work is about the impact of large historic events on ordinary people.
