2 diaries recording daily life of English subjects in India. The earlier volume, consisting of copies of letters dated March 26-May 26, 1854, has the caption title Letters from India, Vol. II. The letters, usually by Georgina Harris but occasionally by her husband James Harris, describe a stay in Lahore (now Pakistan), travel to Peshawar (also now in Pakistan) where James was posted as an army chaplain, and the setting up of their household there. The later volume, again in the form of letters, dated April 9-June 21, 1857, describes the experiences of the Harrises in Lucknow just prior to the siege there during the Sepoy Rebellion. A letter from James Harris dated January 2, 1858, is tipped in at the front and an index of people mentioned is at the back of the diary. Pencil notes added to this volume may reflect preparation for publication.
