The communities of rocky, sandy and muddy shores are analyzed and the dominant species are recorded. The effect of some physical factors as exposure to wave action is correlated with the composition of the most conspicuous communities. The applicability of Stephenson's general scheme of zonation is discussed. From the results of this analysis an attempt is made to characterize and delimit the biogeographical province of the West Indies. At the end, a summary of the most common forms of marine plants and invertebrates of the area is given.
