Beyond Dances is an allegory portraying addiction recovery as a rigorous travel adventure. The story unfolds as a group of "afflicted" travelers traverse twenty-two diverse terrains in search of "Plateau of Serenity." We never know the nature of their affliction, only that it is deadly. This presentation captures the essence of successful Twelve-Step recovery by portraying many dilemmas and impediments that face individuals once recovery from compulsive behavior is sought. The purpose of this story is to point readers toward "the path" of successful life change and away from "side trails" that are, at best, dead ends. The scrutiny of this allegory will edify and its humor will add a measure of light-hearted enjoyment to what is necessarily a serious study.
