"The sketches of proletarian American life in this book were written mostly from my 19th to 26th year, and are arranged in order of composition. Melancholy runs through them, lifting to militant courage in teh last part of the book. I have outgrown the melancholy, but feel it was perhaps inevitable in the progress of a proletarian writer. Yourh is not often brave, often it is bewildered...I have written the first mass-recitation in this country. I hope others will write them too. They are needed. The Social revolution in this country is a wheat-kernel fighting through stony soil. It is a beginning. My book is a beginning too. I dedicate it to my comrades, the few, brave, scattered proletrarian writers of America" - Michael Gold, from the foreward.
