The chief aim of these books is to furnish material that interests and engages the reader, at all skill levels. For beginning readers, the teacher paves the way by oral reading, followed by the pupil retelling the story to the teacher. In this way, the pupil acquires reading vocabulary by (1) by the illustration, (2) by the impetus of the story, or the context, (3) by the position of the words in the sentences, and (4) by repetition. A variety of subjects, authors, and types of literature are presented to that end, with a corresponding increase in new vocabulary and thematic complexity as the pupil advances.
