This exhibition is the first major overview on the subjects since the Rubenism show that took place in the Rhode Island School of Design at Brown University back in 1968. The overview will be ordered thematically, in an introduction and seven chapters: Violence, Power, Lust, Compassion, Elegance an Peace. Each of these chapters will link artists of different centuries in their search to emulate Rubens's art. The Introduction shows Rubens as an heir of the art of ancient Rome and of Venice.Violence will host Delacroix's tumultuous hunting scenes, amongst others. The chapter on Power enables us to present Jordaens, Le Brun, Thornhill and Verrio. Paintings by Van Dyck, Jordaens, Watteau, Fragonard, Manet, Daumier, Renoir and Picasso will be gathered in Lust, whereas Compassion deals with prints and paintings by Rembrandt, Coello, Delacroix, and Van Gogh. Van Dyck, Reynolds, Vigée Lebrun and Lawrence will be represented in Elegance, a section devoted to the portrait. The exhibition will end with a room of which Peace is the main theme. Landscapes by Gainsborough, Constable and Turner will find a place in this room, together with the culminating point of the show, which aims to confront Rubens and Watteau at their best.
