This dissertation project explored Slovenian and German quality newspapers in the context of European integration. Specifically, the notions of social communication by Karl W. Deutsch, and those of commercialism and colonization as proposed by Jurgen Habermas, Thomas Meyer, and Jurgen Heinrich were addressed through a multi-method design. A content analysis of Delo and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, years 1988 and 2002, as well as Finance and the Financial Times Deutschland in 2002, examined both formal and substantive characteristics of newspapers' coverage of the European Union (EU) as well as individual member and candidate countries. Managers, editors, and journalists of Slovenian and German quality national dailies were interviewed about their newspapers' approach to covering the EU countries and issues, about their professional routines and practices, as well as about their perceptions concerning the state of quality (international) journalism. Finally, Slovenian journalists covering the general news and international events for Slovenian quality dailies were surveyed about their professional practices, media consumption, journalistic roles and values, and attitudes toward European integration.
