This paper describes methods for chemical characterization and organic "finger printing" techniques for complex ocean-dumped wastes. The methods employ wet chemical separations and gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry and selective GC detectors. Application of these methods is demonstrated for the characterization of a pharmaceutical waste and for tracking two types of chemical wastes in actual ocean dumping stations.
