Behind any question about what a Christian believes is the more fundamental question of why he does so. What are creeds for? Where do they get their authority? In the face of pluriformity in contemporary Christian belief (and indeed of theological pluriformity within the pages of the New Testament itself) is it possible to be certain, or precise, about any credal statement? Can doctrines legitimately change in changing, and if so, on what grounds? Can we be certain about God whilst critical about Christian doctrines? These are the questions which Anthony Dyson explores. They go to the very core of how it is possible to be a thinking Christian today. He concludes that faith is a lived attitude which interprets the experience we perceive, and that history and clutlure are part of the milieu which profoundly influences the expression of Christian doctrine. Critical attitudes proper to art, culture and science are also proper to religion, and we need constantly to be refining the expressions of our understanding of God. Only so can we give an account of the present realities of our world, experienced as the arena of God's purpose and activity; only so can we integrate our belief and the rest of our living and thinking. -Publisher
