From the 13th to 16th century, tiles were a popular floor covering being much cheaper than marble and much better, more hard-wearing and easier to clean than an earth floor. This volume comprises a catalogue of earthenware paving tiles from 105 sites in Wales, the majority being ecclesiastical. The introduction provides the background to the different types of tiles produced, including mosaic tiles, relief, two-colour and incised examples, their dating, different 'schools' or industries and how they were manufactured. The catalogue is arranged by numbered groups according to their probable manufacture and the provenance of examples are listed and shown on a map. Over half the volume includes illustrations of examples. Includes a site gazetteer.
