Time periods served as makers for differences in verbal traditions as well as form and function of the fusileers. In the first period naming practices were limited and appearances were not highly formalized. Fusileers appeared in support of reform and the Union effort in the Civil War. From 1870-1900 a proliferation of names given to the paraders occurred. The form of appearances included informal behavior, performances at a fixed location, and a separate procession of fusileers. The function of the fusileers of this period appeared to be to provide entertainment. From 1900-1941 naming of paraders was less frequently recorded. Their appearances were highly formalized as part of the general procession of the community celebration. While still functioning ostensibly to provide entertainment, their role was less important than in previous years.
