  • Book cover of The Flying U Ranch
    B. M. Bower

     · 2022

Life at the Flying U Ranch in the Bear Paw country of Montana was pleasant—until thousands of sheep invaded the coulee. B. M. Bower casts the ancient enmity between cattlemen and sheepmen in her own robust and slyly humorous style. Flying U Ranch brings back the Happy Family of cowboys introduced in Chip of the Flying U. Bertha Muzzy Bower, a Montanan herself, understood the joshing, boasting, and thoroughly decent young hands who worked at the Flying U—Andy, Pink, Slim, Big Medicine, Happy Jack, and the other members of the Happy Family. Here they must confront defiant sheepherders just when Chip and the Old Man are in Chicago. Bower delights in showing how they deal with rage and frustration without resorting to violence. The witty and nervy Flying U bunch gets satisfaction from a difficult situation justly ended.

    B. M. Bower

     · 2022

    B. M. Bowers first story, Chip of the Flying U, lays out a ranch in Montana and introduces the Happy Family, the bunkhouse gang that reappears in her later books. Chip is the typical woman-shy cowboy, but he is also a gifted artist (reputedly, Bower based the character on Charles M. Russell, who illustrated Chip). Della, a doctor, is the young woman who disrupts his solitary life. The result as a quality ranch romance. Chip of the Flying U was a great success that led to several movie versions, one of them casting Hoot Gibson as Chip. Today's readers who grew up watching westerns on television will appreciate Bower's cinematic style. After living much of her life in Chouteau County, Montana, she moved to Los Angeles, close to the movie industry that increasingly fascinated her. (Goodreads)

  • Book cover of The Lonesome Trail and Other Stories
    B. M. Bower

     · 2022

Bower wrote a multitude of short stories featuring the Flying U characters. This one best of the collections. These earlier stories have a more familiar flavor and focus mainly on the original characters, rather than the new ones added later. The title novella, "The Lonesome Trail," was evidently composed of several previously-published short stories woven together; the earliest of which, "Why Weary Went A-Wooing," even predated Chip of the Flying U. Chip, of the Flying U by B. M. Bower B. M. (Bertha Muzzy) Bower was the first woman to make a career out of writing popular westerns. And what a career she was: more than sixty novels published from 1904 to 1940, the year of her death, and even more posthumous. In western orbit, Bower was - and still is - a star. Her first, Chip of the Flying U, sets up a ranch in Montana and features the Happy Family, the dorm gang that reappears in her later books. Chip is the typical shy cowboy of women, but he is also a gifted artist (Bower is said to have based the character on Charles M. Russell, who illustrated Chip). Della, a doctor, is the young woman who upsets her lonely life. The result as a quality ranch love story. Chip of the Flying U was a huge success leading to several film releases, one of which chose Hoot Gibson as the Chip.
