"The feasibility of tagging a No. 6 fuel oil with halogenated polyaromatics was investigated. Of many halogenated compounds selected, only three, 1-chloronaphthalene, 1-bromonaphthalene, and 4-methyl-1-bromonaphthalene were fully investigated. These compounds were found to be detectable in this fuel at concentrations of 1 to 100 ppm, using gas chromatography equipped with electron capture detector. The tags were not leached out of the oil during prolonged contact with water"--Abstract.
