General description of the collection: The Ralph C. Huffer papers consist of a photocopy of cornetist Huffer's transcribed diary, "The Diary of the Life of the Author, Ralph C. Huffer, Musn (musician), while in the National Army of the United States of America" (2 Apr 1918 - 21 Apr 1919), dedicated to his girl friend on 17 July 1918. The diary focuses on the life of an Army musician in a regimental band during WWI, particularly the types of music played, the twice daily rehearsal schedule, the regular army drill and marches which the band did also, and the various concerts preformed by the band during ship journeys, parades, funerals, dances, and even during sightseeing trips in Winchester, England, and on the Western Front after the Armistice. He describes the quarters, rations, and uniforms, especially the contents of a full pack, in detail. At the Front, he describes the smell of chlorine gas and dead bodies the camouflage techniques used to disguise roads, and the utter devastation of the landscape. He comments on the de-lousing procedures and on the Spanish Influenza rampant in his unit. He describes the leadership in his company and of the civilians running the YMCA canteens for the military.

A Full Aperture Backscatter Station (FABS) target diagnostic has been activated on the first four beams of the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Backscattered light from the target propagates back down the beam path into the FABS diagnostic system. FABS measures both stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) with a suite of measurement instruments. Digital cameras and spectrometers record spectrally resolved energy for both P and S polarized light. Streaked spectrometers measure the spectral and temporal behavior of the backscattered light. Calorimeters and fast photodetectors measure the integrated energy and temporal behavior of the light, respectively. This paper provides an overview of the FABS measurements system and detailed descriptions of the diagnostic instruments and the optical path.
