Based on extensive research, this provocative volume explores how schools are places where racial conflicts often remain hidden at the expense of a healthy school climate and the well-being of other students of colour. Most schools fail to act on racial microaggressions because the stress of negotiating such conflicts is extremely high due to fears of incompetence, public exposure, and accusation. Instead of facing these conflicts head on, schools perpetuate a set of avoidance or coping strategies. The author of this much-needed book uncovers how racial stress undermines student achievement. Students, educators, and social service support staff will find workable strategies to improve their racial literacy skills to read, recast, and resolve racially stressful encounters when they happen. This book features: a model that applies culturally relevant behavioural stress management strategies to problem-solve racial stress in schools; examples demonstrating workable solutions relevant within predominantly White schools for students, parents, teachers, and adminsitrators; measurable outcomes and strategies for developing racial literacy skills that can be integrated into the K - 12 curriculum and teacher professional development; and teaching and leadership skills that will create a more tolerant and supportive school environment for all students.

Author Erika C. Stevenson was just six years old when, after World War II, soldiers expelled more than three million Sudeten Germans from their ancestral homes in the Sudetenlands of Czechoslovakia. In Fighting for Road Apples, she tells the story of how she was indelibly marked for life as a refugee. In this memoir, she discusses her experiences in bomb shelters; with ethnic cleansing; of enduring a cruel separation from her mother; and of being contained in a stinking boxcar for livestock, condemned for expulsion from her homeland in Bohemia. Intertwined with her familys heritagemarked by misfortunes and struggles of survivalshe narrates the stories of the turbulent, blighted-by-poverty postwar years in Germany. Stevenson describes blithe anecdotes of teen adventures and of falling in love with a foreign student who harbored a few secrets. She also recounts her fathers compelling escape from a British POW camp after D-Day and his later incarceration in a notorious Czech concentration camp. A story of challenges and triumphs, Fighting for Road Apples narrates the true story of what ordinary people endured during an extraordinary time.

This reference dictionary takes a new approach to the study of physical anthropology by focusing on the concepts involved. As Stevenson notes at the outset, physical or biological anthropology is a synthetic discipline which has borrowed much from evolutionary biology, anatomy, genetics, medicine, zoology, paleontology, and demography. Thus, although none of the concepts are unique to the discipline, their relative importance and the contexts in which they are used may be. Here, Stevenson presents concise entries describing the development of physical anthropological concepts followed by bibliographies including most of the major works in the field. The history of the usage of each concept is traced from its origins--often outside the discipline of physical anthropology--to the contemporary and usually multidisciplinary contexts in which physical anthropologists participate. Entries clearly delineate both the theoretical development of the concepts under discussion and their applications in physical anthropological practice. The comprehensive bibliographies enable the reader to pursue further study of concepts of particular interest. Indispensable to students just beginning their studies in the field, the dictionary will also be an invaluable reference for scholars and researchers.

Download the book now and start impacting your Bible study TODAY! Here is what men who have been in the study say about the impact it has had on their lives: "This process has allowed me to be emotionally vulnerable and still maintain self-control, to trust other men, to be honest with myself and before God. I've had, and seen other men have, large positive changes in their self-image, which translates directly into stronger relationships here on earth and with Heaven. There is no question in my mind that this is a program worth your time and involvement." Dave, 58 "What I discovered as a result of being a part of this study changed my life. I will use the techniques I gained for the rest of my life. I would strongly encourage every man to participate in this process. This is something that I have shared with others in my life and it NEVER fails to bring clarity. As disciples of Christ, we are all undergoing the process of sanctification. Many of things we pursue, hoping to experience a change, leave us wanting. It delivers. I am a better man, my walk with Christ is stronger than ever and I am a part of a band of brothers who truly sharpen one another." Tony, 53 "This men's group provided a safe outlet to understand why I felt the way I did, and to intentionally separate the data, judgments, and feelings that influenced my life. I have prayed for Gods knowledge, the strength to handle life's trials, and the self-control to trust God's plan and timing. The answers I prayed for were right before me and I needed to see and accept them to become a better Christian, father, and husband. My relationships with God, my brothers in Christ, wife, and kids are stronger as a result of the work I brought to men's group and implemented in my daily life. I wish I had access to this information when I was younger." Mike, 39
