Stelpipe wants to determine its capability to produce X80 large diameter line pipe and identify a suitable skelp supplier because of a need for higher grade steels such as API 5L X80 (CSA Grade 550) to make pipe that can operate at higher natural gas transmission pressures. This report details the skelp properties achieved by Dillinger in West Germany and GTS in France, and the resulting 1219mm OD x 11.7mm WT spiral pipe properties obtained from these skelps.

The Stelform plate-end welding operation performs unacceptably in the manufacture of thick line pipe, since the welding process stability breaksdown as plate thickness or heat input increases. A recently developed butnot commercially available process, Gas Metal Arc-Submerged Arc Welding isconsidered the best candidate for a new process. This final report on theprogress of the investigation presents details on the operatingcharacteristics, heat input, and weld mechanical properties.
