  • Book cover of Pathogens for War

Pathogens for War explores how Canada and its allies have attempted to deal with the threat of germ warfare, one of the most fearful weapons of mass destruction, since the Second World War. In addressing this subject, distinguished historian Donald Avery investigates the relationship between bioweapons, poison gas, and nuclear devices, as well as the connection between bioattacks and natural disease pandemics. Avery emphasizes the crucially important activities of Canadian biodefence scientists – beginning with Nobel Laureate Frederick Banting – at both the national level and through cooperative projects within the framework of an elaborate alliance system. Delving into history through a rich collection of declassified documents, Pathogens for War also devotes several chapters to the contemporary challenges of bioterrorism and disease pandemics from both national and international perspectives. As such, readers will not only learn about Canada’s secret involvement with biological warfare, but will also gain new insights into current debates about the peril of bioweapons – one of today’s greatest threats to world peace.

  • Book cover of Art of War

Great world conflicts have produced not only great military heroes but also great artists who have documented the heroism and the bloody battles. Spanning wars that have involved U.S. troops, this gallery of outstanding works of art ranges from majestic land, sea, and airscapes portraying all the branches of the armed services to closeups of hand-to-hand combat. The paintings are more expressive than photographs because they compress many experiences into a single view. Charts and maps clarify particular scenes, and first-hand testimonies of the men and women who participated in the battles add an extra dimension. The many oversize reproductions highlight some of the most moving paintings and illustrations ever created in the field of combat art, most made available to the public for the first time. A Selection of the Military Book Club.

  • Book cover of Protecting the Ontario Niagara Escarpment

Protecting the Ontario Niagara Escarpment explores the intersection of politics and conservation, business and public interests, and government and not-for-profit organizations over more than six decades to protect what is today a UNESCO World Biosphere. Reflecting on both environmental activism and government stewardship, author Donald H. Avery captures an important period in Canadian environmental history. Starting with an overview of the North American conservation movement in the 1960s and the important 1968 Gertler Niagara Escarpment Study, he examines the different work done by conservation organizations such as the Coalition on the Niagara Escarpment (CONE), statuary bodies such as the Niagara Escarpment Commission, and government departments and agencies to protect this unique landform until the present day. As part of his assessment, Avery examines the goals and strategies of competing social groups including mining interests, commercial real estate developers, landowners’ groups and environmental organizations , while providing insight into how they used the political system to achieve their specific goals. This research is based on a wealth of environmental organizational records, government documents, news articles, and interviews with Niagara Escarpment Commission staff, that demonstrates how environmental activism and government stewardship made a difference.
