Japanese historic wooden buildings are distinctive regarding the aspect of their material (timber), and of their frequent exposure to natural hazard (earthquake and typhoon). This paper introduces the state-of-the-art of the structural and technical aspects for conservation of the historic wooden buildings in Japan. Damage caused by natural hazards, structural interventions that have been tried, and structural experiments that are being performed are discussed.
