"Gospel According To Bristol: The Life, Music, and Ministry of Ernest Phipps" is the first biographical and critical writing on Bristol Sessions recording artist Ernest Phipps. A Holiness preacher from Eastern Kentucky, Phipps recorded for the Victor Talking Machine Company in 1927 during te same weeks of recording that captured the first recordings by the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers. Phipps was not a professional musician, but a coal miner, truck driver, and Holiness preacher whose music was a function of his ministry. This paper, drawn from nearly all primary sources such as interviews with Phipps's family and court documents, presents the first biographical information on Ernest Phipps and the first extensive critical work, including a discussion of Phipps's last recordings. These sides, recorded for the Vocalion label in 1930 were not previously thought to be Phipps recordings.
