Johann Bode developed a so-called law of planetary distances best known as Bode’s Law. The story of the discovery of Juno in 1804 by Karl Harding tells how Juno fit into that scheme and is examined as it relates to the philosopher Georg Hegel’s 1801 thesis that there could be no planets between Mars and Jupiter. By 1804 that gap was not only filled but had three residents: Ceres, Pallas and Juno! When Juno was discovered no one could have imagined its study would call into question Newton’s law of gravity, or be the impetus for developing the mathematics of the fast Fourier transform by Carl Gauss. Clifford Cunningham, a dedicated scholar, opens to scrutiny this critical moment of astronomical discovery, continuing the story of asteroid begun in earlier volumes of this series. The fascinating issues raised by the discovery of Juno take us on an extraordinary journey. The revelation of the existence of this new class of celestial bodies transformed our understanding of the Solar System, the implications of which are thoroughly discussed in terms of Romantic Era science, philosophy, poetry, mathematics and astronomy. The account given here is based on both English and foreign correspondence and scientific papers, most of which are translated for the first time.

"Most amateur astronomers have never seen one; most professional astronomers hope they never have to see one. But these small objects, variously known as planetoids, minor planets or asteroids, are increasingly being viewed as key to our understanding of the origin of the solar system. Even more surprising, they have had an impact (quite literally) on the study of evolution, paleontology, geology, the future planning of space colonies and space manufacturing, the length of the astronomical unit, the mass of the planets and questions in general relativity - even the nature of time itself. This book was written to present the latest scientific findings on these varied topics, and at the time fill a void in the literature. The landmark opus Asteroids, edited by Tom Gehrels, was published in 1979. While it will remain a useful volume for many years, its technical nature puts it beyond the level of all but graduate students and professional asteroid researchers. It is clearly impossible for any one person to improve upon what nearly 70 scientists collaborated on to produce in Asteroids. In writing this book, Cunningham updates our fast-moving understanding of the asteroids, especially covering topics that were not considered in Asteroids. And at the same time presents this wealth of technical data at a level accessible to the advanced amateur and undergraduate, although this synthesis should also be useful to those who study asteroids at the professional level" --
Recently, there have been growing concerns about the availability and cost of energy and about environ. impacts of fossil energy use, especially global climate change. Those combined concerns have rekindled interest in energy efficiency, energy conservation, and the development and commercialization of renewable energy technologies. This report describes federal programs that provide grants, loans, loan guarantees, and other direct or indirect regulatory incentives for energy efficiency, energy conservation, and renewable energy. For each program, the report provides the administering agency, authorizing statute(s), annual funding, and the program expiration date. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand report.

Raising responsible kids requires responsible parents. However, many parents, even the most devoted, lack a full understanding of the concept of responsibility and the importance of gaining this understanding. In The Robinson Way, Dr. James J. Cunningham presents a unique child rearing philosophy and a comprehensive discussion of all aspects of the parenting process. He gives definitive suggestions and specific recommendations to enhance a child’s growth and development into a happy, productive, and successful adult. Cunningham, who has worked with children, adolescents, and families for several decades, discusses: responsibility, discipline, honesty, and love; intelligent parenting; families as systems; family of origin scale; psychosocial development; The Robinson Way; choices and habits; and overparenting and how to avoid it. Providing a comprehensive overview of parenting from both a theoretical and clinical perspective, The Robinson Way offers an informative resource. It is designed to help parents become more competent and confident in their actions.
