2nd Edition Forty years ago the Spirit of Vengeance—a Purpose—took William Morgan as its host, demanding he avenge the innocent by killing the guilty. Since then Will has retreated behind Gar, a façade he uses to avoid dealing with what he’s become. Cold, impassive, and devoid of emotion, Gar goes about his life alone—until his tidy, orderly world is upended when he meets Ryan, a broken young man cast out by his family. Spurred to action for reasons he can't understand, Gar saves Ryan from death and finds himself confronted by his humanity. Spending time with Ryan helps Will claw out from under Gar’s shadow. He recognizes Ryan is the key to his reclaiming his humanity and facing his past. Author's abstract: Since No Child Left Behind, school leaders have placed more emphasis on dropout prevention efforts to reduce the rate of dropouts and simultaneously increase the graduation rate. The purpose of the study was to examine high school principals' assessment of the implementation and effectiveness of programs, strategies, and interventions used to address dropouts. The researcher also sought to determine the most effective programs, strategies, and interventions in schools of differing student populations and in different locations. The researcher employed a quantitative design for the descriptive study of dropout preventions programs, strategies, and interventions by administering a questionnaire, which was a modified version of the Student Dropout Prevention Survey (SDPS). The instrument featured a rating scale to identify degree of implementation, as well as a scale of effectiveness. The respondents, principals of 138 high schools in Georgia, were administered the survey. The survey was uniquely coded to identify school size and school location upon return. Sports programs, special education programs, career technical education programs, and art, music, and/or drama programs, identification of at-risk students by the graduation coach, and credit recovery programs were most often deemed as fully operational programs, strategies, and interventions. Programs determined by principals as most effective in Georgia high schools were the programs deemed as fully operational. The most effective programs in addressing dropouts yielded similar results in all size schools and in different locations. Conclusions drawn from the study indicated that traditional whole-school programs, such as sports, fine arts, career technical education, and special education were considered fully operational and working optimally in Georgia public high schools. More current strategies, such as graduation coach intervention and credit recovery programs, were successful in addressing the individual needs of at-risk learners. Restructuring of high schools may encourage implementation of some of the less prevalent programs, strategies, and interventions, such as community mentoring programs and career academies consisting of small learning communities. Recommendations for further research included more studies specific to at-risk interventions and restructuring efforts that affect dropout rates. Examination of these issues would provide more insight into the most effective practices for addressing school dropouts.
