Various stock types of white spruce, white pine, and red pine were planted on several sites with large variation in degree of vegetative composition to show how stock types can be matched to site and therefore reduce plantation establishment costs.
The Dunumann method of seedling production uses forest treelitter as a growing medium instead of mineral soil. Trials todetermine the value of this procedure as an alternative toconventional nursery or greenhouse production were conducted atthe Midhurst Research Station with red pine, white pine, whiteand Norway spruce. It is suggested that, in situations whereseedling production targets are low, the Dunemann option could beconsidered as an alternative to field or greenhouse seedlingproduction.
