Local farming communities throughout the world face productivity constraints, environmental concerns, and diverse nutritional needs. Developing countries address these challenges in a number of ways. One way is public research that produces genetically modified (GM) crops and recognize biotechnology as a part of the solution. To reach these communities, GM crops, after receiving biosafety agreement, must be approved for evaluation under local conditions. However, gaps between approvals in the developed and developing world grow larger, as the process of advancing GM crops in developing countries becomes increasingly difficult. In several countries, only insect resistant cotton has successfully moved from small, confined experimental trials to larger, open trials and to farms. By far, most GM crop approvals have been for commercial products that perform well under tropical conditions. However, complete information on public GMcrop research in developing countries has not been assessed. Will policies and research institutions in the developing world stimulate the safe use of publicly fundedGM food crops? The relatively few GM crops approved from public research, coupled with growing regulatory, biosafety capacity, trade, and political concerns, argue to the contrary. To tackle this issue, we identified and analyzed public research pipelines for GM crops among 16 developing countries and transition economies. Respondents reported 209 genetic transformation events for 46 different crops at the time when the survey was conducted. The pipelines demonstrate scientific progress among publicly funded crop research institutes in participating countries. Information and findings are presented for GM crops nearing final stages of selection. Additional details are provided for the types of genes and traits used, the breadth of genetic resources documented, implications for regulation, and the type of research partnerships employed. Regulations, GM crop approvals, choice of transgene, and policy implications are discussed as they affect this research. Based on these findings, recommendations are presented that would help sustain and increase efficiency of publicly supported research while meeting biosafety requirements. To do so, the study examines results concerning investments and choices made in research, capacity, and policy development for biotechnology. These indicate the risk and potential for GM technologies in developing countries. Policy makers, those funding biotechnology, and other stakeholders can use this information to prioritize investments, consider product advancement, and assess relative magnitude of potential risks, and benefits.
The utilization and use of natural resources has significantly led to a decrease in the quality and quantity of the environment. This makes the utilization of natural resources must be performed wisely on the basis of the principles of sustainability (carrying capacity) in order that the natural resources owned by the regions can be utilized sustainably for current and future generations. It is hoped that understanding the carrying capacity of the environment becomes the first step for environmental management to realize the quality and quantity of a good environment. Ecosystem Services approach can be used to know the environmental support capacity in a region, including watersheds. Watersheds are often used as a basis for approaches when people want to solve various environmental damage issues, such as the problem of forest damage, erosion, landslides, floods, sedimentation, river water pollution and river shallowing. In Indonesia, there are hundreds of watersheds including Kayan and Sembakung watershed in North Kalimantan that serve as water supply areas and food supply areas. Therefore, this book aims to know the environmental support capacity of Kayan and Sembakung watershed in North Kalimantan Province in the provision of food and the provision of clean water. This book contains a description of the study of environmental support capacity of Kayan and Sembakung watershed in the provision of food and clean water; description of watershed concept, concept of environmental carrying capacity, concept of ecosystem services and concept of environmental carrying capacity based on ecosystem services; description of methods of determining the environmental support capacity of Kayan and Sembakung watershed based on ecosystem services, including the approach of study, scope of territory, materials and tools, data of studies and data analysis; description of the results of the study includes the environmental carrying capacity of Kayan and Sembakung watershed in the provision of food and clean water as well as the tendency of the supporting capacity of the clean water supply of Kayan and Sembakung watershed that becomes the basis for food supply; description of environmental issues, pressures, conditions/circumstances and the responses to Kayan and Sembakung watershed; and so forth. Therefore, this book is presented as one of the scientific reference sources that can be used as reference material for students and lecturers who study the sustainability of ecosystem-based environments.

My name is Sally Friday. I started school when I was six-years-old. I went to kindergarten through fifth grade at Booker Elementary and while I was there, I won an award for perfect attendance. I also won an award for honor roll all four terms. Then I attended Booker Middle School, and there I also won a couple of awards: one for perfect attendance and two for being named Student of the Year--one in sixth grade and the other in eighth grade. I am now a senior at Booker High School. I plan on finishing school and maybe going to a community college. Life to me means friends and family who you can trust and who trusts you. I am pretty much on the happy side of life, but like all teens I do I have my "days of." That means I do have some sad days or depressed days. I have a few friends here that sort of look out for me and when I am having a bad day, I have someone here at school to talk to. I make my school days go by thinking of either the next hour or what I will do when I get home or on the weekend. I'm not seeing anyone now but when I did have a boyfriend, our favorite places to go were the movies and out to dinner. Sometimes we went to the beach. Only once we went to an amusement park: Universal Studios. We were together for twenty-nine days and then we brokeup; so no, I don't think it was forever.
