  • Book cover of Matthew and Empire
    Warren Carter

     · 2001

"In Matthew and Empire, Warren Carter argues that Matthew's Gospel protests Roman imperialism by asserting that God's purposes and will are performed not by the empire and emperor but by Jesus and his community of disciples. Carter makes the claim for reading Matthew this way against the almost exclusive emphasis on the relationship with the synagogue that has long characterized Matthean scholarship. He established Matthew's imperial context by examining Roman imperial ideology and material presence in Anitoch, the traditional provenance for Matthew. Carter argues that Matthean Christology, which presents Jesus as God's agent, is shaped by claims - and protests against those claims - that the emperor and the empire are God's agents. He pays particular attention to the Gospel's central irony, namely that in depicting God's ways and purposes, the Gospel employs the very imperial framework that it resists. Matthew and Empire challenges traditional readings of Matthew and encourage fresh perspectives in Matthean scholarship."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. • Book cover of Democracy and Association

This book offers the first systematic assessment of what associations do and don't do for democracy. Warren explains how and when associational life expands the domain, inclusiveness, and authenticity of democracy. He looks at which associations are most likely to foster individuals' capacities for democratic citizenship, provoke political debate, open existing institutions, guide market activities, or bring democratic decision-making to new venues. Throughout, Warren also considers the trade-offs involved, noting, for example, that organizational solidarity can dampen internal dissent and deliberation even as it enhances public deliberation.

  • Book cover of Be Reverent

As good as dead... That's how Albert Einstein described people who can no longer wonder and no longer feel amazement. A sense of wonder and reverence is basic to life and to faith. God revealed incredible things to the Prophet Ezekiel. He saw God's throne on wheels, moving quickly from place to place! He saw an army of skeletons reassemble and come to life! He saw the glory of God leave the old temple and then return to the new temple! What the church needs today is a return to reverence - reverence for God's name and for God's glory. The neglected Book of Ezekiel will teach you: • How great and wonderful is the glory of God • Why reverence for God's name changes our lives • How and why God judges sin from generation to generation • Why God sees the land of Israel as "the center of the earth" • The wonderful plan God has for the nation of Israel The Book of Ezekiel is a fascinating book that provides insights on history, theology, and practical Christian living as you behold the wonders of the Lord.
