Surveys the changing and ambivalent views of Jews and things Jewish in West Germany from 1949 and in today's reunified Germany, focusing on reactions to the Holocaust and involving both antisemitic and philosemitic manifestations. An ambiguous form of German historical consciousness is developing which promotes an emotional and intellectual distance from the Holocaust for the sake of a new German national identity. The German and Jewish collective memories are inherently antagonistic and will continue to clash in light of present-day developments.
