This report evaluates the biophysical suitability for net-cage salmon farming of nearshore areas on northern and western Vancouver Island. The base biophysical information was obtained from interviews, reviews of marine pilot reports and hydrographic charts, collection of oceanographic and pollution data, discussions with scientific specialists, and compilation of pertinent scientific literature. Data on 13 biophysical criteria important to net-cage rearing of salmonids were compiled on base maps and each was assigned a ranking based on suitability for fish farming. The report includes a general oceanographic overview of the study area, a description of the study methodology and data compilation methods used, comments on the criteria used for rating the capability of salmon farming areas, and detailed descriptions and appraisals of the waterways evaluated. A list of areas and resources requiring further study is included.
This report evaluates the biophysical suitability for net-cage salmon farming of nearshore areas on the British Columbia coast between Vancouver Island and the mainland. The base biophysical information was obtained by interviews with patrol officers and specialist scientists, as well as by reviewing library information and file data. Data on 16 biophysical criteria important to net-cage rearing of salmonids were compiled on base maps and each criterion was assigned a ranking from good to not acceptable for fish farming. The report includes a general oceanographic overview of the study area, a description of the study methodology and data compilation methods used, comments on the criteria used for rating the capability of salmon farming areas, and detailed descriptions and appraisals of the biophysical environments of the waterways evaluated. Areas requiring additional field investigations are also listed.

Annual report giving a summary of fish production data reported in the yearly census of fish processing plants licensed in British Columbia. Information is given on fish landings and production, licensing within the fishing and fish processing sectors, employment in the fish processing sector, and average recovery rates for salmon, groundfish, other fish and shellfish. Data on fish landings are provided by the federal Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans. Catch data includes direct vessel exports, and estimates of year-end bonus payments to fishermen. A summary is given by species (salmon, herring, halibut, groundfish, shellfish) and aquaculture production.
