This document summarizes good practices for clean-up & decontamination in workplaces where beryllium or beryllium compounds are found. The practices described are based on a review of scientific & technical documentation, adapted for the Quebec context. Topics covered include: permissible exposure levels; definitions of terms; assessment of surface contamination; surface contamination swiping & analysis; housekeeping measures, including prevention of re-release of beryllium into the air, clean-up by vacuuming or wet processes, and vacuum system maintenance; recovery of a beryllium-contaminated workplace to convert it into a beryllium-free environment; recovery of contaminated equipment & other objects; hygiene measures; respiratory protection; and protective clothing & equipment.
