The symmetric SOR method (SSOR-method) for solving the linear system Au = b is considered. The basic properties of the SSOR method are summarized, and a procedure is given for estimating the optimum relaxation factor omega and the corresponding spectral radius of the SSOR matrix S sub omega. Two procedures for accelerating the convergence of the SSOR method are considered, one based on conjugate gradient acceleration and the second based on the use of Chebyshev acceleration.
