This catalogue is published in conjunction with the exhibition "Fortuny: Friends and Followers," on view at the Meadows Museum, SMU, in Dallas, Texas, from February 3-June 2, 2019. Mariano Fortuny y Marsal (1838-1874) was one of the most successful Spanish artists of the nineteenth century and spent most of his career living and working in Europe's cosmopolitan centers. Whether he was in Paris or Rome, Granada or Naples, Morocco or Madrid, Fortuny experienced extraordinary commercial success and was surrounded by an impressive cadre of friends and followers. With nearly seventy paintings, drawings, and watercolors by twenty-three international artists, this exhibition celebrates Fortuny's life and the scope of his enduring legacy. Representative works by French artists, including Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier, Jean-León Gérôme, James Tissot, and the American painters William Merritt Chase and John Singer Sargent highlight Fortuny's international appeal. Fortuny's homeland is represented by Spanish artists including his own brothers-in-law, Ricardo and Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta, as well as by Eduardo Zamacois y Zabala and Martín Rico y Ortega, whose works complement those by Fortuny himself. This beautifully illustrated catalogue is divided into five thematic sections which highlight key aspects of Fortuny's life and work. Each support a scholarly essay that locates the artist within his milieu and explores his lasting impact on both his contemporaries and later generations of artists. It concludes with short biographies of each artist featured herein. As a master painter, draftsman, and printmaker, Fortuny possessed a rare talent that inspired legions of artists in the century following his death. His work was studied, collected, admired, and cherished by some of the twentieth century's most popular painters, from Joaquín Sorolla and Salvador Dalí to Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso.
