The Texas Landscape Project explores conservation and ecology in Texas by presenting a highly visual and deeply researched view of the widespread changes that have affected the state as its population and economy have boomed and as Texans have worked ever harder to safeguard its bountiful but limited natural resources. Covering the entire state, from Pineywoods bottomlands and Panhandle playas to Hill Country springs and Big Bend canyons, the project examines a host of familiar and not so familiar environmental issues. A companion volume to The Texas Legacy Project, this book tracks specific environmental changes that have occurred in Texas using more than 300 color maps, expertly crafted by cartographer Jonathan Ogren, and over 100 photographs that coalesce to fashion a broad portrait of the modern Texas landscape. The rich data, compiled by author David Todd, are presented in clearly written yet marvelously detailed text that gives historical context and contemporary statistics for environmental trends connected to the land, water, air, energy, and built world of the second-largest and second-most populated state in the nation. An engaging read for any environmentalist or conscientious citizen, The Texas Landscape Project provides a true sense of the grand scope of the Lone Star State and the high stakes of protecting it. "Is there in all republics this inherent and fatal weakness? Must a government of necessity be too strong for the liberties of its own people, or too weak to maintain its own existence?"As president Lincoln told Congress his war aims at the start of the Civil War, this statement leaps off the lectern. What freedoms did the nation have? What rights did the states have? Did they have the right to leave the Union just because things didn't go the way they liked at the ballot box? This was the issue that confronted the nation in 1861, already in motion when Lincoln took office.Documenting America: Civil War Edition, explores this question, and more. Looking at documents produced during the time of fighting, the historical context of the document is discussed, followed by drawing meaning from it relative to an issue we face today. The U.S.A.'s history is rich in documents. Explore them, and be informed by them.

The development of the U.S, Constitution, in response to the failing Articles of Confederation, happened in a few years following the Revolution. This book looks at a number of key documents from those years: analysis of the problem, pre-Convention debates, the Convention deliberations, post-Convention debates in the press and in State conventions, and the Bill of Rights. The story goes like this: Seth Boynton Cheney left home when he was 16 years old to join the Gold Rush to California. His descendants, however, have had a hard time finding footprints for him during those years. For many decades his family knew only that he was a 49er, by 1880 he was in the Texas Panhandle and by 1882 in southwestern Kansas, starting a family with a woman 30 years younger than him. Where was he for those missing years, and what was he doing? This book is primarily for the descendants of Seth Cheney. It gives them a little information on Seth, and throws a spotlight on the missing years, as well as on the rest of his life. It includes twenty pages of information on the immigrant ancestor, John Cheney of Newbury, and his son Peter. They are Seth's ancestors.
