In this article, we use the findings of a study conducted in a university in the southeast of Mexico to examine strengths and limitations of portfolios to assess formatively the quality of teaching. The research is part of the study: Model for the Development and Evaluation of Academic Competencies, involving researchers from six Mexican universities. Findings of the study indicate that the use of portfolio allowed faculty members to collect evidence of the quality of their work, analyze their classroom instruction and began to involve in a dialogue for improving teaching.

This study portrays how a male instructor, his peers, and the department head used feedback from student ratings. A case study approach was employed to provide a holistic mode of inquiry that would be consonant with the exploration of issues addressed by the study. The method selected provided understanding of the process and events taking place and the complexities of the context under which the evaluation was conducted (Patton, 1980). The case study was organized around main questions or issues (Stake et al, 1995). The study identified critical validity issues when using student ratings results for improving the quality of college teaching. (Contains 3 footnotes.).

Data collection involves multiple methods of data collection including focus group interviews, document analysis, in-depth interviews, and observations. The study centered on professors who prepare future elementary school teachers. The findings of the study will be used for decision makers in order to create a program for faculty evaluation and improvement at the Normal Schools. (Contains 2 tables.).
