In order to achive the goals of optimal forest management, a mathematical model for a long-term planning in forest area is presented. Growth function, dynamic programming and linear programming are used in order to describe the model.

A critical survey of stand growth functions presented in literature is made. Because neither of them was suitable entirely for practical use, we sugest two original types of growth functions. They comply with all the demands of growth functions and their parameters describe the characteristics of stand and site.
