Als Wegbereiter und/oder Begleiter seiner teils großformatigen, immer stark farbigen Leinwandbilder spielen die Papierarbeiten im Werk von Cornelius Völker (geb. 1965) eine durchaus autonome, aber naturgemäß leisere, intimere Rolle. In Bleistift und Aquarell, hin und wieder auch Ölfarbe auf Papier, erscheinen die Motive, die inzwischen so etwas wie sein Markenzeichen geworden sind – Figuren in ungewohnten Körperhaltungen, Putti und Meerschweinchen, Bücherstapel, Küchenreste … –, sehr viel fragiler, fast berührend in ihrer dünnhäutigen Zartheit. Die Farbe, in den Gemälden oft pastos und zentimeterdick aufgetragen, setzt hier eher leicht hingetuschte Akzente, umspielt die Zeichnung mehr, als dass sie Figuren oder Gegenstände definiert. Dem „barocken“ Farbenrausch der Leinwandbilder antworten Völkers Papierarbeiten mit Transparenz, Sensitivität und der für ihn typischen Prise Ironie.
