Oddball is the story of a young newly commissioned officer in the Union Army he does not do things according to the book but keeps within regulations and gets things done. He wanted to be appointed to the engineering corp. but was put in a cavalry unit in the newly acquired New Mexico and in a war with Mexico. It's an unsettled area that is full of outlaws, people undecided whether to join the Union or be independent and land owners that were given the land by Spanish rulers. He handles all problems but does not follow the book and is called an oddball but is able to solve the problem. He becomes friendly with a Spanish woman who is the daughter of a former governor of New Mexico appointed by the King of Spain. How he handles these conditions is the story.
