“Carmen” is Georges Bizet's famous opera in four acts, first performed on 3 March 1875. The libretto was based on a novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée and was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. Unfortunately, Bizet suffered an untimely death after the opera's 33rd performance, and was consequently unaware of the international success it would come to enjoy. Georges Bizet (1838 – 1875) was a French composer during the romantic era. He is most famous for his operas and his final composition, “Carmen”, which remains to this day one of the most popular and commonly performed works in the entire opera repertoire. An Intermediate / Advanced piano duet for 1 Piano, 4 Hands, composed by Georges Bizet.
Georges Bizet's final opera, Carmen, has become one of the best-known plots with the most memorable of music, despite its initial rejection by Paris critics following its scandalous 1875 premiere at the Opera-Comique, a theatre known for works of a lighter flavour. Basing their work on Prosper Merimee's novella, librettists Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy have fashioned a timeless story of love, jealousy, and violence in the Spanish city of Seville, all set into motion by Carmen, a seductive, free-spirited femme fatale."
"Carmen" is an opera in four acts by the French composer Georges Bizet. The opera, which became Bizet's most famous work, was first performed at the Op̩ra-Comique in Paris, on March 3, 1875, and was not at first particularly successful; its initial run extended to 36 performances. Before this run was concluded, Bizet died suddenly, and thus knew nothing of the opera's later celebrity. This is the choral score of the work, with French and English texts, and without notated accompaniment.

The first English translation of Bizet's letters and journals from his stay in Italy, with explanatory texts from one of the leading authorities on the composer's life and music. In 1857, Georges Bizet (1838-1875) won the prestigious Prix de Rome scholarship which allowed him to study in Italy for a few years at the expense of the French state. While Bizet's correspondence from this time suggests that he was not fond of Italian music, he was especially drawn to the landscape and Italian Renaissance art and painting. Though Bizet's thoughts later turned away from rural life and the masterpieces of the Renaissance, his letters and journals from this period document the growth of a young musician who would eventually write Carmen. Translated into English for the first time, Bizet's letters from his stay in Italy (at the Villa Medici in Rome, with expeditions to various other parts of the country) reveal much about his character and tastes. These extraordinary documents are fully annotated, and presented alongside never-before-published translations of Bizet's journals from the same years.
