Gerhard Richter is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest living artists. With a brush that deftly and romantically captures abstract details and blurred newspaper images alike, he has transformed our understanding of art in the age of photographic reproduction and mass-media imagery. 100 Pictures is a faithful reprint of the intimate, cloth-bound book Richter created in 1996 as a nonstandard anthology of his oeuvre. Following a short introduction to his early work, which features pictures long held in his studio, 100 Pictures presents Richter's output from an intensive period of work between 1995-96. Though this period mainly saw the production of abstract works, it also begat a cycle of eight small-format paintings of an intimate, private nature, which portrays his young wife Sabine as a Madonna-and-child. 100 Pictures is an extraordinary document of contemporary art, finally back in print.

Neben überwiegend abstrakten Arbeiten ist ein Zyklus von acht Bildern kleineren Formats von intimem, privatem Charakter entstanden. Autobiografische Elemente hat Gerhard Richter schon in früheren Jahren verwendet, doch treten sie verstärkt in dieser Folge von Motiven auf, die, verschleiert oder durch Spachtelhiebe "gefährdet", in madonnenhafter Attitüde seine junge Frau Sabine mit Kind zeigen. Alex Katz has been viewed as one of the most important figurative painters in America for more than 50 years and has been a significant influence on a great number of younger painters from all over the world. Through his direct images and simple, everyday motifs that are reduced to the essential, but with a monumental format, he has become a chronicler of modern life in the second half of the 20th century. Even though the paintings with their bold, powerful colours contain many potential symbols, they do not tell any stories. Both representational and abstract, focusing more on the surface than on great depth, the works of Katz resemble film stills: the moments before and after are left to the imagination of the observer. This catalogue is a collection of around 40 paintings from the period between 1959 and 2008. Published on the occasion of the exhibition Alex Katz: An American Way of Seeing, October 2009 - February 2010, at Museum Kurhaus Kleve as well as before in Sara Hildén Art Museum, Tampere/Finnland, and the Musée de Grenoble, France.
