  • Book cover of Conversion Tables of Units in Science & Engineering
    Ari L Horvath

     · 1986

Converting units from one type of usage to another is a constant and regular problem that engineers and scientists have to solve. This book will therefore be invaluable as it provides a complete coverage of all the conversion factors required. Covering areas such as mechanical units, thermal units, units of physical chemistry, units of light, units of electricity and magnetism and also radiation. References are given throughout and there is a comprehensive index.

  • Book cover of Body, Brain, Behavior

Body, Brain, Behavior: Three Views and a Conversation describes brain research on the frontiers, with a particular emphasis on the relationship between the brain and its development and evolution, peripheral organs, and other brains in communication. The book expands current views of neuroscience by illustrating the integration of these disciplines. By using a novel method of conversations between 3 scientists of different disciplines, cellular, endocrine, developmental, and social processes are seamlessly woven into topics that relate to contemporary living in health and disease. This book is a critical read for anyone who wants to become familiar with the inner workings of the nervous system and its intimate connections to the universe of contemporary life issues. - Introduces the reader to basic principles of brain research and integrative physiology - Dissects the dispute between Cajal and Golgi regarding the state-of-the art in the neurosciences and immunobiology - Provides a short history of brain research and metabolism - Discusses contemporary approaches in the neurosciences, along with the importance of technological versus conceptual advances - Examines the dynamics of social connections between two brains, integrating mechanisms of Body/Brain/Behavior-to-Body/Brain/Behavior between subjects

  • Book cover of The Misogynistic Backlash Against Women-Strong Films

This book is an exploration of the political struggle for visibility engendered by the growing number of women-centered popular films and a critical analysis of the intensifying misogynistic backlash that have accompanied such advances in the depiction of women on screen. The book draws from a variety of theoretical and methodological tools to provide critical cultural analysis and alternative readings of women-strong films and their important role in society. The authors engage with popular culture and the popular press, media studies, and rhetorical criticism examining new modes of communication while providing historical context to help make sense of these oppositional readings. The book includes case studies on Mad Max: Fury Road, Wonder Woman, Atomic Blonde, Star Wars, and Ghostbusters to analyze critical responses, men’s-rights activist boycotting campaigns, online harassment, and the political economy that precede and accompany the creation and presentation of these films. This is an accessible and timely analysis of the rise of feminist-friendly and women-led films and the inevitable counterculture of misogyny. It is suitable for students and researchers in Media and Communication Studies, Gender and Media, and Cultural Studies.

  • Book cover of Handbook of Aqueous Electrolyte Solutions
  • Book cover of Calculations in Industrial Chemistry

This book meets the need for an extensive introduction to the techniques of problem solving in industrial chemical applications. The numerous examples are presented in an easy-to-understand fashion, aimed directly at scientists and engineers working in industry, as well as newcomers in the field. The book also provides a quick, comprehensive and contemporary re-education for practitioners, involving interdisciplinary functions and knowledge in the chemical and related industries. The examples originate from the author's own rich industrial experience and cover a broad area of science and technology. A unique feature is that most of this compilation of examples has been reported in journals or performed in the industrial environment by the author. This is "first-hand", direct problem solving for the chemist in industry.

Objective: This investigation evaluated the effect of the Teach-Model-Coach-Review (TCMR) instructional method, within the natural environment, on Parent Implemented Initervention-Enhanced Milieu Teaching (PII-EMT) with caregives of late language emergence toddlers. The dependent variable was the participant's use of three EMT support strategies matched turns, time delays, and expansions with their child during daily routines of mealtime, dressing tasks, and playtime. Method: Three female participants, ages 32 to 48 years, received treatment in a multiple baseline across particiaptns (MBAP) design. Participants received two 60-minute training session per week for 8 to 10 weeks. Sessions occurred in the natural environment. Results: All participants demonstrated a stable baseline. While all participants made immediate intervention gains, Participant 1's gains stabilized through the intervention phase, whereas Participants 2 and 3 made gradual gains. The follow-up phase was zero-celerating revealing maintenance of the learned strategies. The immediate intervention effect across alll participants suggested that the TMCR instruction was the cause of improvement in the intervention phase. Conclusion: The results indicated that the Teach-Model-Coach-Review instructional method resulted in increased use of Enhanced Milieu Teaching language support strategies across multiple family routines. Results cannot be correlated with changes in child language skills nor indicate the necessity or frequency of maintenance to caregivers.
