The brutality of the abuse suffered remained a highly guarded secret among those inside who experienced it and writing became the sole outlet. It has been a few years since the publication of this book and I have finally come to accept what's always been a part of me...the others who lived what I could not. This book has many authors as many tortured souls yearned to be heard. Since the writing of the book more selves grew confident and have come forward through journal writing and on occasion will speak their own words. Jamie, is forever an eight year old girl, never having the strength to grow after being perversely dehumanized beyond her ability to cope. Samantha is twelve and longs to heal from the abuses she suffered since her 'birth' at the age of five. Mary, no more than six years old, holds the emotional pain and waits for the day when we go to 'the long sleep'. Kitty is a tiny member, at only four years old, she holds the tears of almost everyone inside. She hides behind Mama, the gospel singing African-American woman who cares for the young ones. Then there's Rebecca, forever sixteen and the 'life of the party'. Other more damaged selves linger deep in the background, too tormented by their own hell to ever surface again. Selves who may never be able to release their pain; selves who experienced abuse so horrific that they actually 'died' as a result. All that remains of these long dead warriors are their forgotten cries heard only by our ears.
