Rising costs of living are a top concern across the country. This is particularly important for organizations that seek to support vulnerable populations. This report explores what constitutes a living wage in Los Angeles County and the barriers preventing workers in the homeless response sector from receiving such a wage. The authors examined what a living wage is in Los Angeles County using fair market rents for various unit sizes and several family configurations. They then collected data on wages listed in job postings within Los Angeles County for frontline and management occupations in the homeless response sector to assess earning potential. They find that workers at nonprofit organizations, particularly frontline staff, often do not earn a living wage, which contributes to the financial, emotional, and health burdens that these workers face. This is likely to affect employee productivity and retention as well as the quality and continuity of client care.

Technology-enabled platforms and services have helped facilitate an expansion of online business activity, contributing to increased rates of entrepreneurship in the United States. However, concentration in the online marketplace has also increased, with implications for the costs that entrepreneurs must pay to access potential customers and for their ability to compete on a level playing field. In assessing the evolving benefits and costs of the online marketplace, as well as the potential impacts of future regulatory activity, it will be essential to more systematically monitor the trajectories and experiences of entrepreneurs in this space. Doing so can help to ensure that entrepreneurship remains a viable pathway to sustainable financial success for business owners and their employees.

Having a racially and ethnically diverse workforce is an important goal for any industry interested in improving efficiency and supporting equity. This paper examines diversity within the travel/hospitality industry in California. We find significant differences in earnings across races and ethnicities, with Blacks and Hispanics earning less than their white counterparts. These patterns have only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in significant losses across the board, particularly for the non-college educated workers. However, despite existing inequities within the industry, travel/hospitality still exhibits lower earnings disparities for non-whites/non-Asians than other sectors in California. It also remains a steppingstone to a higher earning-job, particularly for those outside of the labor market. Nonetheless, the industry should continue to investigate ways to improve workforce racial and ethnic diversity, especially among higher paying and managerial jobs.

Manufacturing employers often cite challenges to finding and hiring a sufficient number of highly skilled and diverse workers, so it is important to understand how pathways into manufacturing and the retention of manufacturing workers may be improved. The authors of this report address this research gap by examining the pipeline between Ohio's postsecondary education system and the manufacturing workforce. They focus on understanding potential ways to expand the supply of workers and the diversity of the manufacturing workforce. Although Ohio represents a subset of the U.S. manufacturing industry, it has a significant share of manufacturing employment and production. Therefore, it can be instructive for more broadly understanding the challenges and opportunities that workers, employers, and educational institutions in manufacturing face.

There are significant disparities in entrepreneurship start-up and success for women and racial and ethnic minorities relative to White men. These differences are due, in part, to significant inequities in accumulated wealth, access to capital, and the development of valuable networks that provide mentorship and support. Rectifying these inequities represents a significant opportunity: More-effective entrepreneurial support has the potential to improve wealth accumulation among these groups, revitalize communities where minority business owners are located, and boost economic growth by unlocking the talent of would-be entrepreneurs. By crafting targeted and thoughtful policies to enhance entrepreneurship among these underrepresented groups, policymakers would be promoting equality of opportunity while lifting up the economy as a whole.
