The role of the fire officer as a motivator of personnel has been the subject of fire service literature on occasion. The purpose of this applied research project for the National Fire Academy is to examine what does motivate fire personnel. The question will also be asked, "Are fire officers motivating their fire employees?" These simple sounding questions are difficult to test when the subject is subjective. For the purpose of this project, a survey will focus on the fire officer as an example of an employee who is motivated. The measure of that motivation is that this officer has chosen to test for promotional exams and has been successful. The literature review and the results from the survey will serve to guide fire service officers in their quest for improving the motivational climate in the fire house.
