  • Book cover of I Married a Ranger

In 'I Married a Ranger,' crafted by the observant eye of Dama Margaret Smith, readers uncover a narrative rich in detail and steeped in the personal experiences that blanket its pages. Through a distinct literary voice that marries wit with poignancy, Smith captures the essence of a life entwined with the service and sacrifice inherent to ranger life. Although categorized as a special edition, the book echoes timelessness, its relevance undiminished by the era it portrays, speaking to the often-overlooked domestic front of those bonded to protectors of nature and law. Bound within its prose lies not only historical insight but also a candid exploration of societal roles and the intimate dance between duty and devotion. Dama Margaret Smith, with her prolific pen, illuminates the paths walked by those whose partners don a uniform, reflecting perhaps her own encounters and observations. Her motivation, possibly drawn from personal experience or the stories shared in a collective consciousness of ranger comrades, culminates in her authentic portrayal of a spouse's perspective. The narrative, possibly cathartic, certainly carries Smith's unique fingerprint, as she writes from a vantage point that encompasses the full spectrum of emotions that come with loving a ranger. 'I Married a Ranger' stands as a poignant recommendation for those seeking a narrative as honest as it is engaging, one that delves not merely into the life of a ranger but into the heart of the one who loves them. Smith's work resonates with readers invested in understanding the textured quilt of human experiences, specifically those tied to commitment and resilience in the face of a partner's demanding profession. It is an essential read for literary aficionados who appreciate works that embrace history, evoke empathy, and celebrate the quiet strength fostered through true companionship.

  • Book cover of The First Forty Years of Washington Society, Portrayed by the Family Letters of Mrs. Samuel Harrison Smith

Born in 1778, Margaret Bayard Smith was a highly intellectual woman "read widely in the classics, sciences, and literature" according to The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. Despite her capabilities, she was confined to a role of domesticity as was the practice of the time, but she used that role to befriend many of the prominent political families of Washington D.C., eventually becoming regular guests at Jefferson's white house and the home of James and Dolley Madison, among others. She outlined many of these relationships and her thoughts on the budding politics of D.C. in letters to her sisters, kept by her son, then eventually passed on to her grandson, and now belong to the library of congress. They give a fascinating point of view of Washington society and it's up and coming politicians from a woman who had a front row seat to its workings.

This widely acclaimed book is based on the one question most asked by women who are experiencing menopause - is hormone replacement therapy necessary? Experience has shown gynaecologist Dr Margaret Smith and psychotherapist Patricia Michalka that not all women need or want hormone therapy during menopause and, indeed, not everything that happens at this time of life is due to hormones. In this book, the authors use women's experiences (including their own) to explain how to sort out the confusion caused by the interaction of hormones and life events. their writing contains practical guidance-both medical and psychological-and reflects the rich tapestry of many women's lives with all their humour, confusion and clarity.
