A two part critical and creative investigation of the use of violence in children's science fantasy graphic novels. While this thesis is primarily creative, the project incorporates theoretical principles from colonial theory, post-colonial theory, just war theory, and explores the intersections between violence and speculative fiction. The critical introduction contextualizes the creative portion in relation to the historical, theoretical, and critical frameworks by which the project is informed. The introduction provides a brief history of the genre of science-fantasy and speculative fiction comic books, and goes on to examine the role colonization and imperialism play in the narrative structure of popular science-fantasy works. In particular, thesis examines the use of violence and justification of violence, in addition to considering non-violent alternatives.
