Montage has been hailed as one of the key structural principles of modernity, yet its importance to the history of modern thought about cities and their architecture has never been adequately explored. In this groundbreaking new work, Martino Stierli charts the history of montage in late 19th-century urban and architectural contexts, its application by the early 20th-century avant-gardes, and its eventual appropriation in the postmodern period. With chapters focusing on photomontage, the film theories of Sergei Eisenstein, Mies van der Rohe's spatial experiments, and Rem Koolhaas's use of literary montage in his seminal manifesto Delirious New York (1978), Stierli demonstrates the centrality of montage in modern explorations of space, and in conceiving and representing the contemporary city. Casa Wabi, a nonprofit arts center located in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico, is a stage for world-renowned contemporary artists and architects to engage with the local community. Tadao Ando's remarkable Casa Wabi dots the Pacific coastline of Mexico with structures by Alberto Kalach, Alvaro Siza, Kengo Kuma, Gloria Cabral, Solano Benitez, Jorge Ambrosi, and Gabriela Etchegaray. Founded in 2013 by renowned Mexican artist Bosco Sodi, it combines artist residencies, a gallery, and living quarters with classrooms, gardens, and public space. Tadao Ando centers the foundation on a 312-meter-long wall; his trademark concrete structures radiate off it, capped in woven palm tree leaves for ventilation. These local palapa-style roofs are often the only element distinguishing indoor and outdoor spaces, an effect complemented by wooden shutters in place of paned glass windows. Other unusual native building materials include Mexican parota wood and marmolina. Led by director Carla Sodi, Casa Wabi challenges architects and artists to contemplate nature deeply, as it provides new tools for area residents. Casa Wabi is both a world-class architectural destination and a model for new strategies of creative intervention within economically depressed communities.

Dabei stehen Fragen des Stadtbildes sowie die Reflexion der Stadt im Medium des Bildes im Vordergrund. Die Studie zeigt auf, wie die Autoren von "Learning from Las Vegas" auf Fotografie und Film zurückgriffen, um für die neue, auto-orientierte Form der Stadt adäquate Mittel und Modi der Darstellung zu entwickeln. Darüber hinaus behandelt die Untersuchung Aspekte der Buchgestaltung, versucht aber auch, die Methodik der Autoren von "Learning from Las Vegas" vor dem Hintergrund einer kunstsoziologischen Theorie kritisch einzuordnen.

For two decades, Swiss photographer Serge Fruehauf has documented fascinating architectural details cast in concrete. Yet his focus lies not only in the beauty of the built environment but also in the surprising and sometimes absurd puzzles created by later interventions--stairways that lead to dead ends, disfigured garden walls that have long outlived their purpose. Serge Fruehauf--Extra Norma brings together the best and most interesting of the more than one thousand images in the artist's most recent series. Taken in Paris, Geneva, Grenoble, and Lyon, Fruehauf's photographs constitute a critical reflection on architectural modernity mitigated by the photographer's love of the spaces he has photographed and his deep sympathy for the architects and planners that have been drawn to concrete as a useful, multifaceted building material in the latter part of the twentieth century. Despite their promising qualities, the buildings or clusters of buildings that are the product of modern construction methods with concrete appear today as bland monstrosities or grotesque hybrids of traditional and modern architecture. Fruehauf's photographs are joined by a preface by curator Martino Stierli, who offers an insightful discussion of how Fruehauf's work highlights these structures as allegories of today's cultural situation.

This revised and updated edition is a comprehensive monograph on the Swiss architects E2A. Brothers Piet and Wim Eckert see their work as an interpretation of contemporary living conditions. In today's context, expectations, experiences, and ambitions characterize places and clash with reality. The incompatible becomes the platform of the discipline of architecture, and in the work by the two architects it becomes a prolonged journey of discovery during which associations and relationships are explored and exposed. Here, one experiences a fine line between dream and reality that could be described as systematic incoherence. Thus, rather than designing the perfect machine for an idealized image of society, E2A integrate different and diametrically opposed conditions that were once mutually exclusive. Projects, ideas, essays, and notes supplement building projects and record positions, assessments, and ongoing questions.
