The volume explores the theme of ambiguity in medieval and early modern literature in essays honoring the life and work of Arthur Groos, Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities at Cornell University, USA, emeritus. The famous expression diz vliegende bîspel from Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival is its watchword. In the poem the black and white plumage of the magpie represents the characteristic complexity, ambiguity, and ambivalence of the romance. Removed from its historical context the expression is also a figure of Arthur Groos's wide-ranging intellectual flight. In addition to his work on medieval German verse narrative, he has made important contributions to courtly love poetry, medieval and early modern scientific literature, early modern German literature in general, and especially to opera.

Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Nautical Science, grade: Distinction, University of Plymouth (MLA College), language: English, abstract: The topic of the dissertation is the supplementation of the existing IMO SMCPs with the commands necessary for manoeuvring under tug assistance. For this purpose a number of English language commands have been developed which allow safe manoeuvring of tug assisted vessels in all ports and countries. The dissertation shows the most important international and national (for Germany) legal provisions according to which the captain of the vessel to be piloted and the Bridgeteam have to be informed at all times about the commands given by the pilot to the assisting tugboats or their captains via VHF radio communication. Finally, the conclusion elaborates on the need for a common command language and demonstrates the need for the insertion of these commands in the appropriate place in the SMCPs. The Maritime Safety Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) decided in 1973 to use the English language in shipping for communication. In 1977 the Standard Marine Navigational Vocabulary (SMNV – IMO Resolution A380.(10)) was developed and adopted, and in 1985 amended. After a period of application, the IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases - SMCPs -were implemented in international law with the adoption of IMO Resolution A1.918(22) by the 22nd Assembly in November 2001. Today, the SMCPs are used in the shipping industry and are the basis for the training of nautical officers in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). According to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea - SOLAS, a common language shall be used on ships to which the Code applies. This is particularly true about the master's responsibility and authority to make decisions, e.g. with regard to manoeuvring with tugs. As there are no uniform commands for manoeuvring under tug assistance in the SMCPs, these commands are given in the respective national language or in a non-uniform working language. This circumstance prevents the master from being able to understand the communication between pilots and the assisting tugboat captain at any time and, if necessary, from intervening accordingly.

Im Rahmen der Reihe "Kirchen der Gegenwart" stellt der vorliegende Band die Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine / Ev. Brüder-Unität als eine weltweite Freikirche vor. Ihre geschichtliche Entwicklung wird in zwei Stufen kirchenhistorisch ausgeführt: zunächst die Entstehung der Böhmischen Brüder als eigenständiger Kirche im Kontext der Hussitischen Reformation ab 1457, dann die Erneuerung der Brüder-Unität seit der Gründung Herrnhuts 1722, die unter der Leitung von Graf Zinzendorf zur Bildung einer internationalen Freikirche führte (Teil A). Die Theologie der Brüder-Unität wird von ihrem Bekenntnisdokument "Grund der Unität" her entfaltet. Dabei kommt das theologische Programm des Namens "Brüdergemeine" zur Sprache, wie auch die Fragen nach Einheit und Vielfalt im globalen Kontext und ökumenische Bezüge (Teil B). Die Missionsgeschichte von 1732 bis zur Gegenwart, die sowohl für das Selbstverständnis der Brüdergemeine, wie auch für ihre internationale Ausbreitung eine zentrale Stellung einnimmt, wird im Überblick dargestellt (Teil C). Schließlich (Teil D) werden die heutigen Strukturen der Brüder-Unität als weltweiter Kirche dargestellt und ihr kirchliches Leben in vier Regionen exemplifiziert: 1. Afrika mit rapiden Umbrüchen am Beispiel von Tansania und Südafrika, 2. Europa als Ort klassischer Herrnhuter Gemeinden in Deutschland, Dänemark, Schweiz, den Niederlande und Großbritannien, 3. die Karibik mit Beispielen für selbstständig gewordene Missionsgebiete und Kirchen in Westindien-Ost und Nicaragua, 4. Nord-Amerika (einschließlich Labrador und Alaska) mit unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen der Brüdergemeine ("Moravian Church") als Einwanderungs- und Missionskirche. Einem Kaleidoskop gleichend verweisen die Geschichte (A), die theologische Lehre (B), die geographische Verbreitung (C) und die heutige Situation in vier Erdteilen aufeinander (D). Von besonderer Bedeutung ist, dass eine internationale Autorenschaft die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes verantwortet, so dass dem globalen Charakter der Brüder-Unität auch methodisch Rechnung getragen wird.

Vor allem aber ist Silence Zankapfel der Allegorien Nature und Noreture, die an Silences Geschlechtsidentität ihre Überlegenheit über die jeweils andere demonstrieren wollen. Dabei ist ihre Geschlechtlichkeit nur ein Aspekt der faszinierenden Figur Silence, die selbst allegorische Züge trägt. The medieval Roman de Silence tells the story of a maid who is raised as a boy, far from courtly civilization, and who takes on a series of male roles: she becomes a traveling minstrel, warrior, and knight; in doing so she even elicits the desire of the queen. Above all, however, Silence represents the bone of contention between the nature and nurture allegories, each of which wishes to use Silence's gender identity to demonstrate superiority over the other. Yet her gender is only one aspect of the fascinating character Silence, who herself has allegorical characteristics. With its wide variety of themes, this text invites us to include it in discussions about personifications/allegory, voice/speech/silence, nature/culture, the theory of emotions, the theory of writing and media, and historical narratology.
